BPSU 20th Anniversary Conference

June 2006 saw the BPSU complete 20 years of surveillance.  To celebrate this momentous occasion, a conference was held on Tuesday 30 May 2006 at the Institute of Child Health, London.

The conference provided an opportunity for college members, International Network of Paediatric Surveillance Units members, representatives from other national surveillance units and patient support groups to come together and reflect upon 20 years of surveillance undertaken by the BPSU.  Over 140 delegates from around the world attened the conference.

The presentations concentrated on the role of paediatric surveillance to date as well as possibilities for the future. 

The meeting opend with an introduction from Dr Patricia Hamilton, RCPCH President. This was followed by a round up of the BPSU work over the past 20 years by our recently retired chair Professor Mike Preece.

The special guest presenter was Professor Angus Nicoll of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control who spoke on a very topical theme “Pandemics and other emerging infections”. Professor Nicoll concentrated on the implications of a SARS outbreak and how it would impact on children.

Other  speakers include Professor Bhupinda Sandhu, childhood inflammatory bowel disease; Professor Elizabeth Miller, vaccine preventable diseases; Dr Delane Shingadia, childhood tuberculosis; Professor Deidre Kelly, biliary atresia; Professor Carol Dezateux, screening policy and Dr Barry Evans, consent and confidentiality. The Sir Peter Tizard bursary winners Dr Scott Williamson (Thyrotoxicosis and Dr Shamez Ladhani (malaria) also presented their work.

We were also delighted to have Dr Sheila Shribman attending in her capacity as National Clinical Director for Children.
